Default 351 cj cam question

i recently put a 351 cj intomy 1973 mustang the numbers on the block are D2AE-CA 1K29 and 173F near the water pump. i was wondering why after having the engine rebuilt i had to add .050 spacers on the rocker arms so they valves would close properly i used a KTC650 cam kit there were no spacers when i took it apart so why do i need them now?
