Default New Guy, looking to purchase a classic

Hello, I am new here and I just wanted to get some oppinions about a potential purchase I might be making tomorrow. It is a 67 all original mustang. It only has 65,000 original miles on the chasis and motor. He says the interior is flawless, the only problem is a little fading on the top of the rear seats. There is absolutely no rust(I will be giving a very extensive search tomorrow anyway though). The paint looks awesome as well. I dont know, it sounds perfect but I would like to get some pro oppionions. Where should I look for rust and what are some other areas of concern I should have. Thanks so much for your help, and have a nice day. Kyle

Take a refrigerator magnet with you when you go look at it. The typical rust areas are the Cowls (Pour a bucket of water in the cowl, and see if the water runs on the floor inside) The floor pans, the bottom front corners of the doors, the rear quarter panel, and under the rear window chrome and the frame rails, and under the battery tray. Use the magnet to try to find bondo. If the magnet does not stick, then some bondo repair has been made. Take a hammer and screwdriver with you also. The frame rails rust out from the inside out. Bang on the frame rails with the hammer to see if you can punch a hole in it and listen for a "ping" of good metal. Use the screwdriver to try to punch a hole in the front floor pans to see if they are rusted out. Look inside the trunk for rust. Take up the trunk liner for a better inspection.

I used the screwdriver and hammer when I inspected mine before I bought it. If those floor pans are not rusted out, the screwdriver witll not even make a dent in them. Same with the frame rails. If the owner refuses to let you do that, then walk away very quickly.

Thanks a lot for the information. I am going tomorrow afternoon to check it out. The owner says that it only has 65,000 original miles and I hope I can see in person if it is true. Thanks again for all the information and I'll keep anybody who cares updated.

lol, soaring your car buying tips should come with a disclaimer: "You break it you bought it!"

Remind me to never let you near my car if I ever put a for sale sign on it...

....which will never happen by the way
