I went the cowl cover way, and have no regrets. No problem with leaking, or the heater.

Warrior,
Soarings right that you need to have the cowl open (no cover on it) if you want to use the heater or AC; otherwise, it's like having it on recirc and the windows will fog up-plus it might get a bit stuffy. The reason for using the cowl vent cover is for a cheap and quick way of protecting your cowl and interior from corrosion, which from the sounds of it is what the OP was looking to do, at least in the short-term. Since I don't have a waterproof cover nor am I able to park the 68 Mustang inside, I plan to eventually (soon) get a cowl vent cover that I will leave in place while the car is parked. Depending on the weather conditions I will likely remove it while driving. I was able to seal up the leaks in my cowl using the plastic hat repair kits, but mine was "only" rusted out at the hats with enough metal left to use the patch kit. Even with a cowl that doesn't leak, I think the cowl vent cover is a good idea to keep the cowl from getting wet as much as possible and prevent rusting.
