Getting Started
OK so my friend managed to get a 1972 Stang with a 351 Cleveland 2V and its got 100,000+ miles. What are some good starting things to do for the engine to beef it up, we already have plans for a 4 barrel carb. any advise will help! Thanks

RE: Getting Started
As with all projects you need to start on paper.
1. What is your budget
2. What is your performance expectations
3. What is your project use
Before doing anywork you should spend a little time getting all 3 of these things in agreement.
As for slapping a performer intake on your 351c you are better off just running the stock...since the performer is nothing more than an aluminum stock style intake. You will gain the benefit of a pad to mount a 4v carb to it but that is about it. IMO you should look into the Weiand Xcelerator for the 2v heads it is a good intake. However you have to be careful with clevelands if you don't think through the whole build and just start slapping mis-matched parts together they are easy to dog out (but then again so are most motors).
One of the reasons to sketch out 3 points in a plan
If you have $1000 to spend and want to make a 400 horse power street prowling killer...it aint gonna happen.
However here are some rough ideas that may or may not help you:
$1000
xcelerator intake, 600-650 carb, upgraded cam with hydro lifters, double roller timing chain - nice little motor that will make some good power in the idle to 5500 range
$2000
xcelerator intake 650 carb, slightly large cam with hydro lifterdouble roller timing chain, new one peice valves in the heads, studs, springs, and roller rockers, dual point carb and/or petronix ignition, exhaust - fun setup will run quick up to about 6-6500.
$3000
xcelerator intake 650-750 carb, solid cam, install oil gallery restrictors, double roller timing chain new one peice valves, studs, springs, & roller rockers. MSD box with new MSD dist., exhuast - fun fun stuff with alot of power and would prob make power too 7k.
But all the money doesn't and shouldn't go into the motor.
The car has 100k miles.
When was the suspension last rebuilt? How about the brakes? What about the tire? I say this alot you should build the car first and then bring the power. If I had $3k to spend on a car I just got with 100k miles, I would spend $1000 on a new suspension and $500 or so on other maintaince type things like brakes, filters, radiator flushes, electrical system etc. before touching the motor.
