Default gilmer belt drives?

i know a lot of aussies use 'em so there must be a reason, i don't care about the sound or any of that jazz but what are the advantages over a gilmer belt setup over a traditional setup? i figured i might get one due that i already got a gear drive instead of a timing chain.. but wanted to hear input from others. thanks
