Ok you want 400 hp, your probably gonna have to supercharge a 289 or 302 to get that muuch power in a reliable streetable package. You can get 400hp with a 351 with just ported stock heads and a performer rpm cam / intake / carb package (less than 500 or 600 bucks) and full exhaust. Very streetable and mean as hell sounding. Try that with a 289.

So now you have my $.04

I know people with 600 hp with 289's that are N/A. They run leaded racing fuel and are really beefed up but they are streetable. Not something you want to go diving in everyday though. Im just saying you don't always need to go bigger to make something better. It seems like eveyone always says get rid of the little motor and put a bigger one in. I like shifting at 7,000 in my 289, once you get over 6,000 the engine sounds perfect to my ear anyway. 289's are damn good motors.

Not bashing a 289 or 302 by any means, but more power is easier to come by and more streetable the more cubes you have. And your friend must have like 15 to 1 compression and be revving to 10k rpm to make that much power NA.
