Actually a 9" rear end from a '71 will be 2" wider:

67-70 59.25"
71-73 61.25"

It should still fit but you may have some issues if you run very tall or wide tires.

Are you doing a v8 swap, or are you trying to upgrade from an 8"? You may consider a fox body 8.8" rear. You'll have to hack off the coil perches, get leaf perches welded on, and pick up some 5-lug axles and brakes, but they're plentiful and cheap, unlike 9" rears.

Which rear end do you have now a 8 inch or the 7.5?If its a 8 inch i would keep it unless you gonna make over 350hp then you need a 9 inch or 8.8.

im upgrading from a 6cyl so my current rear end is the 7.5, i actually found a deal today guys parting out a foxbody, imma get the 5.0 with harness and computer plus a carbed intake on the side incase i wanna run carbed which i probably will for now, good cond t5, and a 8.8 rear end rebuilt with 3.55 gears which will be perfect for what i want to do, all for 1100 imma try and talk him down a little but it seems like a decent deal to me, all i have to do is convert the rear to 5 lug and weld the spring perches on in the right place right to run the 8.8?
EDIT: just rear your post starfury, thanks for that info, sounds like thats gunna be the best thing for me to do for now atleast
