I don't know, the more I look at it the more I think it was wrecked, but it just seems so odd to have a buck plate off another convert/std, straight 6. I need to find another mustang guy to look at it and give me his opinion.
Anybody want to meet up?

Bucks county, probably less than an hour away.

I wouldn't be surprised if a silver car was painted red. Back then, silver paint only lasted 3-5 years, then got chalky white. Modern paint, with a clearcoat, has no such problem. Painting Mustangs red is an old sales gimmick, and of course red is more popular now than it was then.

Does the VIN on the build tag match the fender apron VIN?

Thats just it. The vin tag is no longer there where the notch in the fender is. I'm told there is another one UNDER the fender by the drivers hood hinge but I took the bolts out and gently pryed up on the fender lip and could see nothing. If there is one ther how far under the fender would it be located? The vin on my title doesnt resemble anything on my buck tag and it looks to have some CRAP MIG welds under the hood on the inner fender well in front of the strut towers.

I bought the car thinking I would restore it to its stock form, but I have no idea what stock is right now.

I have seen aprons with so much paint and crud on them it took a muleskinner to see the VIN right where it belongs. If the LF fender apron has been replaced, due to accident (not uncommon) these is at least one more VIN on the aprons. These are supposed to be on both sides, under the top lip of the fender, between the shock and hood hinge. loosen all the top bolts on the fender, and the bolt above the top door hinge, and the one that goes through the side cowl at the top of the kick panel. What is the VIN on your title? Does the car have a warranty tad on the LH door?

Here's a buck tag decoder. I have no idea what clear means. I do know at Metuchen in '67, TOP K meant Manual Black top with Glass Backlight

I think the only thing you are missing for the door data plate is the DSO.

the vin number on my title is about 10 digits long with no letters and does not resemble the nuber on the buck tag. Is that consistant with other vins of this era?

No. 64-73 VINs always follow the same pattern: 5T02K123456, 3T07H123456, etc.

Perhaps you have a state-issued VIN due to the front apron repairs. A good Tag Agent might be able to get you back to a Ford VIN, if you can show him one on the car. Probably all they need is a rubbing.

say for instance, I do find a vin under the fenders that does not match the Buck tag. Is there anyway to get a reproduction buck tag with the correct information and codes from th original car?

Sure, you can get a tag, but most of the info will have to be inferred, since Ford threw away -literally- for the 64-66 cars. Same with the warranty tag on the door.
