Default 22 gal tank in a '66

The dimensions of a 22 gal tank are identical except that it's 1" deeper.

I'd like to swap out my 16 gal tank and put in a 22 gal tank in my '66 coupe.

I know it'll drop right in, but how about the filler pipe?

It seems as if I would have to somehow bend it to make the right curvature.

Has anyone done this? Difficult? Worthwhile?

you mean swapping out for the 69/70 tank? I thought that was a 20 gallon tank...

I know its been done and shouldn't be difficult, should be an almost direct replacement, will just hang lower.

Yeah they make a 22 gal available for the '70. Just curious on the filler pipe and if others had to bend theirs as well.

From what I've seen, you have to modify the filler neck. Minor fabrication, shouldn't be too difficult.

I know it's a dumb question - but would I use the filler neck for my 66 and mod it or one from the 69/70?

I've done it. You need the '70 22 gal tank, '70 fuel sender, and a new filler hose. Yes, you will need to modify the 66 neck. You might be able to use the 70 neck, but I didn't try that, since I already had the 66 neck.

I had thought about this being that our car will be a daily driver. Does the 22gal tank come up into the trunk higher or does it simple drop below more? At this point I have no room for a taller tank coming up higher in the trunk due to all the electronics mounted to plywood on the trunk. Safety note.. tank has been sealed off from trunk and 1/2" closed cell foam/vinyl between.

If it doesn't come up higher I might do this later.

The bottom half of the tank was unchanged 64-70. The top got progressively higher. The top of the 70 is level with the side floors.

OK thats what I thought. Most of the cars electronics are currently taking up that entire area with a suspended floor above it all. Guess I'll not be doing that change.
