Default transmission won't go in gear

well, just fired up my new engine for the first time it sounds great. however, my transmission won't go into any gear. inittially it sounded like it was trying to go into gear and then nothing. i put a new flywheel, torque converter (i think it's 2200 stall speed), and transpack in. i already pulled the valve body out to make sure everything was linked up and it seemed to be okay. i put it back together and still no gears. what could be causing the problem? i was all ready to drive for the first time and i had no gears. it's always something.

Default RE: transmission won't go in gear

Please excuse the basic questions, but...

Fluid level in park at idle?
Fluid aireated?
Shift linkage connected, adjusted and working correctly?
Vacuum to modulator diaphram?
Good flow at oil cooler?
Pressure tests?

C4 is known for the intermediate servo pawl falling off. Also if it's an old valve body, I've seen the govenor valves gummed up.

Nothing magic inside, but I do suggest a good book (factory service manual is pretty good for the C4/C6)
