Default 71 Mustang 302 2v carb

Hello all,
My dad has a 71 Mustang that he bought new and has finally started to pretty up. So for his birthday I decided to buy him a new carb. I purchased the Holly 0-4412S to replace the stock Autolight that has a crack. The carb I bought is 500CFM and manual choke. I would like to remove the manual choke and replace it with the automatic. This is where I hit two issues. Issue 1 was that when I called Holley they said that 500CFM is far too much for a stock 302 and that I should be in the 350CFM range. Is this correct? Issue 2 is that the original carb is not auto or manual, but the choke is controlled by the heater line. Is there any negatives to switching to the automatic? Where is the best place to get the + power from? Thanks in advance for any help. Using the search function it looks like 500CFM should be just fine.

500 is fine for a 289/302 iirc the stock 289 carbs were in the 470cfm range as for the power for the choke you want a key on source so its not on all the time...iirc one of the wires on the alternator is a keyon source

Oddly enough, I am going with a manual choke. Manual chokes put me in control of the mixture during warm up, and I find that my engines last longer when I'm the one running the choke.

I can't be any help but I love the 71 Stang. That was my second car I owned, back in high school. Mine was a white ragtop. The 302 died so I put a 351W in her. Worked quite well.

Well, hey....if you're going to upgrade to a bigger (hopefully better) carb...why not go the full route with a good intake and 4-barrel, nice cam, headers, and...since it's a '71...upgrade to electronic ingition. You WILL notice a difference!!

Oh...yeah...one more thing....seriously...if...IF...you do choose the "cam/carb/headers,etc." route, that WILL entail a full engine overhaul if that it the original engine. You DON'T want to start beefing-up an old motor without new rings, bearings, etc.etc. or you WILL have problems.

Have fun...!!

Thanks Diputodo, It is the orig motor, so for now just carb. Hopefully in a few years we will give er the upgrade she needs. Got the Holley carb for the price of the Autolite so just putting the new automatic choke parts on it and hope to drop it in over the weekend.
