In addition to the chassis upgrades mentioned above you can do the following if you want:

buy a shock tower reinforcement kit that welds into place.

buy urethane engine mounts or chain your engine down on the drivers side so it will not break the stock type rubber engine mount.

Shelby deep channel shock tower brace to fit a non shelby from npd etc.

another trans option is a richmond road race trans. you can select your own gear ratios.

bilstein, koni or ride tech adjustable shocks.

Or go ahead and build your 500 hp motor since you know so much.. I would. I wish I knew so much. I would build a 500hp motor.. I would just get a dart block, and some huge heads and stroke that sucka... Add a huge high lift custom ground cam and have some fun till the rear end or trans gave out.

What are the other plans for the car? Maybe you could try finding a big block. Otherwise a blowthrough carb and turbo setup would work, or a supercharger. That would be my direction.

My next build is going to be 500-550 at the crank.

Plan is a Dart SHP 302 block, 363cid, probably AFR195 heads, custom cam, forged internals, H beams, Mahle pistons, hand prepped oil pump, re use my Canton 9qt RR trap door baffle pan and XFI, but with a different intake. Possibly custom built headers.

But that's a very expensive engine that would go into a car that would already be ready for it (most of the chassis/suspension work is there) in a car I have a lot of experience driving. A 500hp classic is a TOTALLY different animal than a new 500hp Vette. Sorta like riding the most pissed off, man killing, fence wrecking bull at the rodeo.

OP,

Why 500 hp? Did you come to that number after considered study or are we just pulling a nice round number out of our ***?

your opening a can of worms here and you will get flak from everyone from all sides. it seems you want to be cheap... it can be done but your already going in the wrong direction. if you want to ride with the big boys you gotta understand what everyone is saying here. You can't just come in and say "I want 500hp car but I want to be cheap." nothing is cheap in this hobby, especially the powerband your wanting.

I have 69 coupe with a 393w, est hp 450hp at the crank with a built c4 and soon to be ford 9. I had to do the brakes, did front coil over conversion and now installing subframe connectors. Im going to tell you right now this was not cheap.

honestly I think you will be happy with 350-400hp and thats a safe rating for a 302, I wouldn't suggest any higher hp/tq than that on a stock block or stock chassis.

good luck with your build.

I've been prepping my car to receive a ~450 ish hp motor (FE 428 PI)...and I the whole time that I was building it I was trying to keep the HP down so that I wouldn't tear up my car. I've put in adjustable coil over suspension, front and back, new floor pan with torque boxes, new drive shaft, 9in rear end, power disc brakes, front and back, and a TKO-600 5 speed. I'm still worried that my car won't be able to handle the extra power. Mine is a daily driver that I put, between 7-10k miles on a year, when I'm here. Car costed $15k (in 2006) work totaled about $15k and I have about $10k in my motor.

We need to know what you plan on doing, will it be a daily driver, weekend racer/driver, full time track racer? Are you looking for a specific race time/engine class?

My current motor is a pimped out 302 with the Edlebrock Performer RPM heads, intake and cam...since you're into numbers, its about 375 to the flywheel and about 315hp to the rear wheels. Truthfully, it's more than enough motor for me. I got a good deal on a 428 block and am trying to build it for a daily driver. We're all a little crazy here, so don't worry about your RFI (request for information).

Also please show a little more respect here because:

There's couple guys with 2,000 forum posts (Boogershnot and Fastbackford351) and a guy with 10,000 posts (67mustang302) giving constructive criticism and advice to a guy who has three forum posts.....The three that I listed are respected people in/on this community forum.

Lastly:

Welcome to the forums...keep us updated on this build. NH is cold (I was born and raised in Mass. Now call Hawaii/Thailand my home) get her done so that you can enjoy this summer...also post pictures of your Mustang...God knows that we love to see pictures of other peoples rides!
