pull those garbage points out, and install something like this>>>>>>>http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pn...FZKCaQodOkQGgg

you will never have to worry about them wearing out of adjustment or burning out again

search this part number on the site>>>>>> 1381A

and yes, worn or misadjusted points can cause all of you symptoms. points are like whale oil lamps, good for their time, but technology has moved on, so swap this conversion kit it, and see if that fixes it. at the very least you will never have to replace/adjust points again

Sounds like a bad coil. On the ignition switch side (+) of the coil you should have 6-8 volts when the points are closed and ignition on, not start. Whoever put the fan in may have replaced the pink wire (resistance wire) from the ignition to the coil. This would put full 12 Volts on the coil and the coil will over heat. It is probably cooked so first thing is to replace it and insure that there is a resistance wire from the ignition. If you have an aftermarket coil, check that the correct extra resistor was installed as many supply an extra resistor. Some don't need them but a factory coil needs the pink wire. The coil only uses 12 volts for starting which is supplied from the solenoid.
It is not uncommon for coils on their way out to show exactly your problem.

Yeah, I'd check the coil before I did anything.

There should be a nice blue/white spark at a spark plug. Yellow ain't gonna cut it.
