Default Gas Gauge 68

Please be gentle with me, this is my first time: I am a novice new vintage Mustang owner andfound out the hard way that my gas gauge registers a 1/4 tank when I'm out of gas. Also, when I fill the tank the gauge stops between 3/4 and 7/8 full. I took the sending unit out to see if the float needed adjustment. It all looks o.k. Also, with the harness disconnected the gauge did drop further, but still above "E" (1/8 tank). Could the sending unit be bad or is there some calibration that can be done to the gauge? All suggestions are welcome. I have not tried a new sending unit yet. Any thoughts? Thank you for your time.

Personally I would go with a new sending unit, theyre only like 20-30 bucks, one that i had had a metal float, and it got gas in it somehow and it wasnt reading correctly.

I agree. It's cheap enough to try anyway. Thanks for your time.

I recently had the same problem. The new sending unit took care of it. A new sending unit is a cheap and easy fix.

BFry:

Thanks for the input. Did your gauge exhibit the same characteristics? Even when I had the wire un-plugged from sending unit the gauge did not go below 1/8 tank. This makesme think it's the gauge (?). I think I will try the sending unit first, did you have any trouble setting the gasket? Any tricks to get it all back together? Regards.

I didn't check the guage while it was disconnected, sorry. Everything seemed to go fairly smooth, maybe I was lucky. I had a friend of mine give me a hand who had done this before, so that helped.

GOOD LUCK!!
