Identifying a 9 inch rear-end?
I've heard that the 9 inch rear-ends are all front-loaders and that no bolts exist on the back. Is this true? Do any non-9 inchers look like this also? And what are the benefits of a 9 incher over others? Many thanks in advance!

yes there are others where the carrier loads from the front of the axle housing. the way to make sure that it is a 9" housing is to see if you can get a socket on all of the bolts holding the carrier to the housing. on a nine inch rear end you will need a wrench to unbolt two of the 10 bolts.
i can post a picture of what i mean if it will help you out.

here is a link to the FAQ from this page. http://mustangandfords.com/techartic...ff/index1.html
The short answer is Yes they all have drop out third members(front bolts). The general consensus is that an 8 inch is plenty good up to about 400 hp.

Yes most if not all 9 and 8 inch carriers were all frontal bolt-ons. I do believe that the early I6 cars with the 7.7 inch rear had rear plate removable rear ends, although someone should correct me on this. The major benefits of a 9 inch rear are more splines on the axel, more surface area on the ring and pinion gear, and all aroung a tougher gear. Many gear head will throw a 9 inch ford rear in there hot rods, even chevys, because the ford 9inch is quite possably the best and toughest rear end ever produced.
the biggest diff. between a 9 and 8 inch rear end is the 9 inch housing on the back side(the back part you see when you look at the car from behind) has a rather large notch in the left side that sticks about a inch off the housing, this was put there for clearence issues of the ring gear. And had a bump plate that was instaled on top of the housing for protection of the rear end bottoming out. I cant tell you all specifics about the internalls, but visually you get the idea. The 8 inch wont have either of the things i mentioned with the 9 inch

...and 351foxstang, any photos would be a great help.
Each day I learn something more about the '67 fastback recently purchased, and I'm anxious to get home to check this one out.
