Late model GT with Auto: Does your tranny clunk when you do this...
If you have a late model GT with an auto, try this... drive on level ground around 45-50 mph and hold that speed for 2-3 seconds to where you are not pulling or dragging, then stomp on the gas pedal.
In my 04 GT auto, I get a clunk in the drivetrain, followed by a short delay, then it downshifts then takes off. The clunk is similar to being in 4th or 5th in a manual transmission, and holding the clutch in, and reving it up to around 2000 and popping the clutch. It doesn't happen at slower or faster speeds.
Do you get a clunk too?
I got the shop foreman at the Ford dealership to ride with me during for a test drive and he found it strange. We got in another 04 GT auto on the lot and it did the same thing, but not as loud. The shop foreman got with the "hotline" and he later told me that the Ford engineers said it was quite normal. He said when you are cruising along as described above, the clutch releases as if you were preparing to stop. When I stomp on the gas pedal, the clutch quickly engages, then the transmission senses the load then decides to downshift. When I asked why my 94 Explorer or 96 Ranger or 03 Expedition never did that, he said those trucks were not built as performance cars and were designed for smoother less aggressive shifts. He said there wasn't much they can do as far as a warranty fix.
Does this make sense? Do I have other options besides an aftermarket shift kit?

Mine does the same thing as well, it kind of feels like the rear end jumps up. Also at around 37-40 in OD it feels as though it wants to bog down and when you give it gas it doesn't want to downshift.

Nothin you can do except shift kit...... There not alot about 100 bucks for transgo, easy install also, but it will make it to where you wont feel that anymore....

Mellow.... have you installed a TransGo? Makes me nervous screwing w/ such a precise machine. Slushbox or not...it's el complicado!
Any feedback on the install? Better to go pro?

Easy.... Ive done 3 of them already.. Transgo makes it so self explanatory for the user... Havent delt with any of other brand yet.... But there all the same....
Its intimidating at first messin with the valve body but nah its not so bad...

It is just the slack in the driveline. If the driveline didn't have any slack in it, it would break under heavy torque loads. Don't sweat it.

shift kit your tranny, transgo kit will increase line pressure which will give you precise shifts, more aggresive drive, and will EXTEND transmission life. . most auto trans problems are caused by low line pressure under stress. the shift kit increases line pressure which inturn gives you crisp, sharp shifts and noticible performance gains between shifts.
