Loose rocker arms, one hangin' a little to the left
Took drivers side valve cover off today because it was extremely loose and I decided I'd polish it while I was working. I have also been hearing a bit of clicking while accelerating from the side. I immediately noticed a rocker arm cocked to the left. Is this ok? Most of them are loose and I can spin the valve lifter. I've read a few different things. Some suggest the play in the rocker arms is ok and some say to tighten. It's a 65 289 all stock. Any suggestions?

Off center rocker arms are not good.
I think you were spinning the push-rods, not the lifters. The lifters are underneath the lower intake manifold and ride onto of the cam.
Do you have solid or hydraulic lifters. I don’t know your motor. If solid lifters , then you probably just need a valve adjustment. If hydraulic, then there is no adjustment. Just make sure the rockers are bolted down properly when its cylinder is at top dead center. If it still wiggles, then either the cam lobe, lifter, push-rod or rocker arm is worn.

Yes I was spinning the push rods. Its a 65 289 A-code. Im unsure weather I have solid or hydraulic. Only one rocker arm was off center with others slightly loose. Is there a specific torque for the bolts on top? Am I going to hurt anything by tightening them enough to stop them from moving? The one that is off center I loosened and re tightened but it went right back to off center to the left. Thanks for the reply.
