Looking to buy my first GT. What do I look for?
Hello everyone.
Just joined up here, and am seeking advice from those "in the know". I've wanted a Pony Car since the late '80s'. I used to love the last few years of the Fox body LX 5.0 cars, but never could get one (young and broke). Fast forward 20-some years, and I'm finally in the position to get a Mustang (older and not quite as broke). I want to get a GT 6M, and am looking at the used market (2011-2014), as I want one with the solid axle. If I listen to much of what I've been hearing/reading 'round the web, then I would conclude that the Coyote motor & MT-82 are junk. Between the BBQ-ignitor noise, and other reported ticks, not to mention the clunky transmissions, I'm kind of overwhelmed. However, I have a hard time believing that it's a bad power plant. I'll be looking at some cars in the very near future, are there certain things to listen/look for that are specific to the new 5.0? Thanks in advance for any insight. If I posted in the wrong area, I apologize.

The Coyote engine is as good as it gets. The MT-82 is not the best but then if it is not "speed shifted" all the time it will serve you well. Plenty of aftermarket shifters out there that make it more enjoyable.

The only one i've heard for the motor was the #8 cylinder burning up sometimes. Didn't hear about it after the first year. The Mt82 was also not so good in 2011, issues from incorrect metallurgy of the synchros and the weight of the fluid was incorrect in some instances.
Anyways, 2013 and 2014 seemed to be very solid all the way around.

IIRC,all mustangs except the 03'-04' cobra and 15' and up have solid axles. if your going to get one, search on cars.com or autotrader etc. in your area. narrow down your searches for options you want in the color you want. if it were me, ideally I would get a 14' track pack car in GHIG with low-ish miles. do some research as well. the infamous water leak can wreak havoc on s197 mustangs from 05'-14'. check under the carpet on the passenger side to see if there are any traces of water leaks. if you can, pull the kickpanel off and check the SJB and its connections. the #8 cylinder issue was more of a tuning problem, at least from what Ive read. if your patient and look around youll find the Mustang that you want. good luck
