Dead Trans? hope not......
So, i was on my way to work yesterday and was cruising at 55mph and all of the sudden...POP! then i couldnt put my car into gear. pulled over to side of road hearing another pop. then stopped my car, let it idle and heard a soft clacking sound that kept timing w/ idle. turned car off. saw no signs of trans fluid leaking or smoke. got back in, started it up and put it in 1st. slowly let out on clutch and car started shaking. pulled it home. checked trans mount, looks ok as far as i can tell. car will shift into all gears, but reluctantly. still sputters and shakes when i try to accel. clacking/knocking sound occurs still also. very faint until i try to make car move then it gets louder and stays that way afterward. even while idling. i'm stumped. any ideas? code reader just threw out some general exhaust/fuel codes. nothing that would be related. p1151, 1000, 1127, 1116
thanks!

A u-joint would have no affect on shifting. Shifting can be affected by two main things. Shifting linkage (clutch, throw-out bearing, etc) or internal trans issue.
Under your tranny you may have an inspection plate. It will be held on by one or two bolts (New Edge models had them not certain about SN95)
With the plate off you should get a good view of the clutch fork, throwout bearing, ring gear (starter) and a glimpse of the clutch pressure plate.
The Popping you heard could one of the pressure plate arm springs broke. That would make it hard to shift since the disc would not have all of the pressure taken off when you press the clutch pedal in.

Still haven't had a chance to look at inspection plate, however I did have my father-in-law, who worked on trannys a loooong time ago, look at it n he said it's probably a bad clutch. He drove it around, it did fine for a block or 2 then it died. Does this sound like a possibility or was he just throwing a suggestion out just for the heck of it??
