Slight Pinging noise on 87 octane
Okay fellas. A little info: 2000 V6, 195,000 miles. I bought the car for 1300 bucks and rebuilt the rear axle and did a few minor things. It has hauled my *** 4000 miles in the past month or so no problem.
The other day driving home I thought I heard a little pinging. I thought this was strange because it was 0 degrees Fahrenheit outside. I thought pinging was caused by excessive heat. Well I checked my temp gauge and all was nice and cool. So I listened again. It only happens under load during a slight acceleration up a hill or on a flat surface. If I get into the gas enough it disappears.
So I was thinking at first it wasn't ping, and it was valve noise, like a lifter not staying pumped up.
I starting considering the mileage. I wonder if the timing chain was stretched out enough if it could cause the timing to retard. Can the computer see this and compensate? Can the chain be stretched out enough to be the culprit here? With almost 200,000 miles it can't be like new anymore. My gut tells me its a timing issue, but the noise is still faint enough that I cannot tell with certainty if it is ping or valve chatter.
Anyone ever have a similar experience and figured out what it was?
