Auction-bound 1969 Mustang Mach 1 Is in Impossibly Good Condition

Mileage is unrealistically listed at 3,558, which leads us to believe that it was rolled back during the restoration.

It goes without saying that muscle cars are beloved in America. But that isn’t exactly the case in the rest of the world. Sure, the current Mustang is a hit in far-flung places like Germany and China. But historically, our big, sporty coupes have gotten the cold shoulder in places around the globe. Well, except in Australia.

Yes, the Land Down Under has always been a big fan of straight-line, big-displacement speed. They’ve had their own brand of muscle cars nearly as long as we have – for reference, check out Mad Max’s 351-powered Ford Falcon XB. So, it doesn’t surprise us that this 1969 Cobra Jet-powered Mustang Mach 1 has made its way down there.

Offered by Gosford Classic Cars outside of Sydney, this Mach 1 ticks all the right boxes. Built on February 27, 1969, this Black Jade over Black Clarion car benefits from a thorough restoration, with an emphasis on originality. Outside, the gold Mach 1 stripes pop off of the deep metallic green paint. And inside, the interior looks like it did when it came out of the San Jose factory 49 years ago.

Mileage is listed at an impossibly scant 3,558, which leads us to believe that it was rolled back during the restoration. Hopefully, the included Marti report will clear up any discrepancies.

Under the hood, the Cobra Jet 428 looks clean enough to eat off of. It’s mated to a four-speed manual transmission, optioned with close-ratio gearing. Other options include power front disc brakes, a “Traction-Lok” differential, and factory tinted glass, which is still in great shape.

So what does all this American muscle cost in Australia? Well, $110,000. But before you spit your coffee all over your computer, remember this is in Australian Dollars. Converted to American Greenbacks, that’s about $79,000.  Still steep, but this is a lot of Mach 1 for the money. As Gosford says: “… this vocal ’69 428 Cobra Jet Mach 1 Mustang is one of the finest we’ve ever seen.” If we were half a world away, we’d go take a look at this one right away.
