While the new Mustang is everything a road-racer could ask for, and the Shelby GT350 twins are everything a real racecar driver could want, there’s definitely a sincere lack of catering from Ford to one of the largest Mustang enthusiast groups out there: the drag racers. However, according to Ford, Ford Performance is getting right on that.

Still in the testing phase, Ford Performance is hard at work creating the next Cobra Jet drag car. One of the biggest changes to the car is the rear suspension. While the new IRS system is a phenomenally good one, the setup just doesn’t have the reliability or the strength to be repeatedly beaten upon, day after day, on the track. That’s why Ford Performance is working on a new Solid Rear Axle, something many Mustang enthusiasts have been clamoring for since the announcement of the IRS in the s550.

The Cobra Jet prototype is currently making its way around the country testing out new pieces and parts along the way. Besides the old school solid rear axle, the Cobra Jet prototype also has been fit with a massive supercharger on top of the already brilliant 5.0L Coyote motor. And according to Ford, it already runs 8.97 in the quarter mile.

So get ready Cobra Jet fans, this pony car is getting ready to decimate everything with a Chevy badge real soon.
