Bullitt Mustang

Bullitt Mustang stunt car was once thought lost to the crusher. Amazingly, this infamous movie car survived somehow.

Perhaps the most famous movie car of all time, the Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang from the film Bullitt, has spawned multiple runs of special edition cars. And when the iconic, original movie Bullitt Mustang was found and revealed by Ford at this year’s Detroit Auto Show, it was undoubtedly a special moment. But the second car used in the filming has also long been feared lost to time. Yet, like its twin, the “other” Bullitt Mustang appears to be alive and well, according to a recent piece at Yahoo.

While the first Mustang lived an easy life as Steve McQueen‘s hero car, this one did all the dirty work. That meant leaping over the steep inclines of San Francisco’s roads and ramming into the bad guy’s Dodge Challenger. It was damaged so badly that after filming, the car was sent to a scrapyard. But somehow, the second Bullitt Mustang escaped imminent death and made its way to Mexico.

Over the years, the Mustang received multiple paint jobs. Then, it landed in somebody’s backyard in Los Cabos. Years later, Hugo Sanchez spotted the Bullitt Mustang, along with a coupe, and purchased both. Sanchez took the car to a man named Ralph Garcia with the intentions of making it an Eleanor clone. But Garcia, knowing that S-code GTs were quite rare, requested a Marti Report. And that’s when the two discovered how special this car really was.

Now 50/50 owners, Sanchez and Garcia are working to restore the car to its original movie condition. With the guidance of Kevin Marti himself. It’s truly an incredible find, and an incredible story to boot. After all, who would have guessed that both of the most famous movie cars of all time, both considered gone just a few years ago, would both be found within months of each other?
