Coyote V8 Mustang Faces Off Against Tesla Model S

The Tesla P85D is fast, but can the techno wizardry that powers it beat the good old-fashioned V8 in a drag race? DragTimes lined a 2013 Ford Mustang GT up against the new Model S P85D to see which was quickest. Even with more than 400 horsepower coming from the Coyote V8, it would still be an uphill battle to take on the Tesla’s nearly 700 ponies. From a stop, it is easy to tell which car will win within the first second or so. With AWD, and its higher power rating, the Tesla roars away to an easy win. But then things get interesting.
For a second race, the two cars start at a rolling 45 mph. Without the pure launch speed and grip from the Tesla’s AWD system, it has a much harder time getting away from the 5.0, and after a bit of driving, the Mustang begins to overtake the Tesla. And then the story begins to twist even further. According to the video below, the Tesla hits its speed limiter, which on the P85D is supposed to be 155 mph. But according to Ford, the Mustang should also be limited.
In 2013, that limiter was supposed to sit at 147 mph, so why does the Mustang continue to gain and eventually pass the Tesla? Is the Model S limiter stricter than we thought, or is the Mustang’s looser? Sadly we don’t get any answers in this video, but man, is it fun to watch.
