This particular accident involving a special Mustang Shelby GT500 is rather hard to watch, but there are lessons to be learned.

Palm Beach Dyno has earned a reputation for being one of the very best Mustang tuners in the business over the past few years, with more than a few pony car owners turning to them for that particular service. However, PBD also builds and races its own vehicles, which serve as test beds for their products as well. One of those machines is rather famous – an S550 Mustang Shelby GT500 otherwise known as “Overkill,” a car that has set many a notable mark at the drag strip in recent years. Sadly, however, that same Mustang Shelby GT500 was involved in a serious wreck while making a pass at TX2K23 recently, which PBD discusses in this new video.

This would be an emotional moment for anyone, but given how much time and effort went into this particular build, it has even more sentimental value for its owner. However, what’s truly impressive is the way that the Mustang community reacted to this news, as well as friends and family associated with PBD – heck, they even wanted to donate money to help fix the car, which may not be salvageable at this point, proving that the company has quite the loyal following.

As we can see in the video, the GT500 stumbles a bit off the line on this fateful pass, but the driver stays in it, regardless. However, once he gets near the top end, the car pulls to the right, crossing the center line before it begins weaving back and forth. Despite the driver’s best efforts to get it straight, the pony car smashes into the wall at high speed, setting off the airbags in a rather violent display of physics.

Luckily, he wasn’t hurt and even said that the impact “wasn’t that bad,” at least inside the cabin. The outside, however, is a different story. Regardless, he admits that he made mistakes, chiefly among them, continuing to push the car even when he knew something was wrong. As for what actually caused the crash, well, that remains somewhat of a mystery, but PBD plans on pulling black box data from the car to try and figure it out.

In the meantime, everyone has their theories, but ultimately, it’s just a miracle that the driver was able to walk away almost completely unscathed, which is a great reminder to always wear full safety gear when you’re at the track – in this case, it most certainly prevented someone from suffering a major injury, and it could have quite possibly saved their life, too.
