Ford’s Carbon Fiber Wheels Take Major Automotive Industry Award

You’ve seen the Mustang Shelby GT350R carbon fiber wheels before. Not only are they gorgeous, but they are as performance-enhancing as they are eye-candy. And now they’re award winning too!
The renowned publication, Popular Science, reviews thousands of new and shiny products and innovations every year, including automotive products. After reviewing, they then chose 100 winners across 10 categories for their annual “What’s New” issue. Needless to say, in order to win with a product or technology, you must truly represent a significant step forward in its category.
“The Best of What’s New awards honor innovations that shape the future,” said Kevin Gray, Popular Science‘s executive editor. “From life-saving technology to incredible space engineering to gadgets that are just breathtakingly cool, this is the best of what’s new.”

These award-winning wheels are insulated with a ceramic thermal barrier coating adapted from technology that is similar to what NASA used on the space shuttle. Each one of the 19-inch wheels weighs about 15 pounds less than an equivalently-sized aluminum wheel, which is truly shocking.
Also, the Mustang Shelby GT350R represents the only non-six-figure vehicle in production to feature full carbon fiber wheels. And for that, we’re stoked!
