Ford Mustang Claims Nearly Half of All American Sports Car Sales

Mustang sales are up 5.4% in Q2 despite all of the challenges thanks to a 20% surge in GT500 & GT350 sales.
It’s the least shocking news ever to point out that the car industry is currently in a world of hurt thanks to the continuing economic fallout from the ongoing global pandemic. And, yet, despite an overall drop in company-wide sales, Ford announced interesting Mustang sales figures this morning.
Not only are 2020 Quarter 2 retail sales UP by 5.4% over a year ago, but the Ford Mustang claimed a sports car market share of 43% during this quarter. That’s right, nearly half of all American sports cars sold over the last three months were Mustangs.

How is this possible? One word: Shelby.
Turns out that Shelby GT500 and Shelby GT350 buyers, overall, have been less affected by the recent economic downturn. In fact, it looks like they may have been bored during various shutdowns so GT500 and GT350 sales soared by 20%, which makes up for the turndown in base Mustang and Mustang GT sales. Can you imagine how many MORE GT500s Ford may have sold without dealer markups or the Dearborn plant shutdown?
That said, the new 2020 C8 Corvette is red-hot too, so expect those to be flying out of dealerships as Bowling Green increases production. Ford Explorer ST sales were also up by 42%, so it seems that, while Q2 2020 will never be remembered as a great year for car manufacturers… car guys (and car ladies) sought out performance vehicles for a little social-distance cruisin’!
