The Owner of a Mach 1 Model Digs Up Some Interesting Japanese History on the Car

Here’s a bit of news that some here at Mustang Forums might not have known. Buried in the history of the Ford Mustang is a Mach 1 known as the “Japanese Mustang.”

Didn’t know? Well, don’t feel bad. Mark Wilson, who owns the model pictured here, said he’d never heard of the specialty model either. And he’s has worked for Ford creating special packages for the Asian Pacific market.

Apparently, Wilson first learned about the car when he stumbled on a ‘71 Mach 1 Japanese Mustang with a 429 Cobra Jet engine for sale on eBay. According to Wilson, the specialty models have been sold in Japan since the early ‘70s.

So what makes a Japanese Mustang different? Well, apparently, one of the major distinctive design features on the Asian-modified ‘Stang is the placement of the side-turn signals. They sit high on each of the front fenders.

Wilson, who has turned into a Japanese Mustangs historian of sorts, says that he’s been able to track down about 15 1971 – 1973 specialty models to date. All of the models are heavily optioned, which appears to have been a trend with the cars.

According to Wilson, most of the cars are still in Japan. Another three are believed to be in Australia. However, given this recent bit of information, we wouldn’t be surprised if more started popping up soon at U.S. auction sites. Heck, we could see them becoming new, highly-sought-after collectibles.
