Mach 1 Mustang Raffle for a Cause
In Support of a Local Diabetes Charity, Ford Is Set to Raffle a Classic Mach 1 at the Chicago Auto Show
Sitting among all the new cars being showcased at the 2017 Chicago Auto Show is a 1971 Grabber Blue Mach 1. It’s just a bit more special than the rest of the show cars, though. And not just because it’s a classic Mach 1 standing in a sea of mostly new vehicles. (Although that would certainly be enough to pique the interest of most here at Mustang Forums.)
No, the main appeal of this classic ‘Stang lies in the cause it’s supporting. JDRF Illinois is actually raffling off the Mustang at the show to help raise money for further research on Type 1 diabetes. According to the CBS Chicago report above, 1.2 million people are affected by the disease. It’s a condition where the body is unable to produce little, if any, insulin.
It took Mark Babala about a year to restore the Mach 1, which he finished in time to be displayed at the Chicago show. But Babala said it was well worth all the work. Particularly since he’s had family members who have died from diabetes.

Mimi Crabtree, a spokesperson for JDRF Illinois, says awareness will help deal with the disease. “It’s serious, but with good treatment you can have a good quality life,” she tells CBS.
With partnership from Ford, JDRF is hoping to raise $200,000 for the effort. The winner of the Mach 1 Mustang will be announced the last day of the show, February 20.
