What Kind of Mustang Can You Get for $1,000?

As it turns out, you can get a Mustang for a grand that isn’t horrible.

In recent build-off competition between Jalopnik‘s Tavarish and B is for Build, they were determined to find the best car you could buy and build for under a thousand dollars. This $1,000 challenge ended up with Tavarish buying a mostly stock early 4.6 mod-motor SN95 convertible on Craigslist for a song. He then set about modifying the car as best he could, while spending almost no money. Because the springs are a linear rate, he was able to cut a couple coils out to lower the ride height without too much repercussion (we still don’t condone this), and completely cut the car’s exhaust off (we DO condone this). The car, as it turns out, isn’t all that bad. As Tavarish says, “For a thousand bucks, you can do a lot worse.” And that’s the gospel truth.

Of course, this car doesn’t have a working odometer; it stopped reading properly north of 180,000 miles. And sure, the steering is a bit vague, and the rear end is a bit tall. But it’s an impressively good car for only 1,000 greenbacks. The handling is described as “not horrible,” along with the braking and other inputs. The air conditioning and the radio even work. How can anyone complain about that?

The car will even do a donut if pushed. Really, these days, anything that has a V8 and rear wheel drive that starts, runs, and drives is an absolute steal of a deal for just $1,000. We’ve all bought a lot worse for a lot more money. If you can get something that sounds as good as this for anywhere near a price that low, jump on it, because you’re making out like a bandit.
