John Wick’s 1969 Ford Mustang Fastback

Keanu Reeves Pilots a 1969 Fastback in His Newest Blockbuster

Seeing a Mustang on the big screen is always bittersweet. Like man’s best friend in countless young adult paperbacks, two things are going to happen: you’re going to get attached, and that dog is going to bite it.

Goldfinger. Bullitt. Drive. Gone in 60 Seconds (both of them). All gorgeous Mustangs. All meeting a terrible fate. Drive even had the audacity to whack Christina Hendricks, but that’s an angry post for another day.

The newest Hollywood blockbuster to feature a Mustang is John Wick: Chapter 2. The film stars Keanu Reeves and a 1969 Ford Mustang fastback as his wisecracking sidekick. Just kidding — the car doesn’t talk. Unless you count the bellow of a dual exhaust attached to a large-displacement V8 with a lopey idle.

If your last run-in with Keanu was Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, you’ll be surprised to find out that he’s a bona-fide badass. Reeves has undergone extensive weapons and stunt training to reduce his reliance on stunt performers. He’s also a well-known motorcycle enthusiast in his spare time. For Wick, Reeves even went to driving school to learn how to hustle that ’69 through some impressive action scenes.

Maxim recently shined a spotlight on the 1969 Mustang used in the movie. Maxim guesses that it’s a big block car — either a 390 or a 428, but definitely not a Boss 429. However, as is often the case with these things, several cars — five, to be exact — were built and subsequently destroyed for the movie.

All 1969 Mustangs — especially fastbacks — have an undeniable presence. But this one has the distinctive Cobra Jet hood scoop, hood pins, and front and rear spoilers that leave it looking somewhat like a Mach 1 without the side stripe.

Where do you think Wick’s beast fits into the pantheon of great movie Mustangs?
