Magnificent Seven: Modern Special Edition Mustangs
There have been boatloads of special edition Mustangs over the years. But these gems are some of the best from the modern era.
Unless something goes drastically wrong, the seventh generation of the legendary Ford Mustang will arrive at dealers this summer. That guarantees that there are more special editions — including the new Dark Horse — on the way. But before we start drooling over those future classics, let’s take a look at some of the modern marvels we’ve seen Ford produce over the last two decades or so.
Now, the cars on this list vary considerably in regard to production numbers, performance, and value. That said, they’re all V8-powered, rear-wheel drive coupes with a mean streak, and any of them would make for a wicked dance partner. Check them out and see if you don’t agree.
1. 2000 Ford Mustang Cobra R
When the Cobra R was revealed, the Mustang was still primarily a straight-line weapon. But along with a stoked 5.4-liter V8 and a side-exit exhaust, it sported a huge wing, and a host of suspension upgrades to make sure it went around corners as well as it smoked the tires. It only came in red, and only 300 were built.
