Design Changes Don’t Just Happen Over Night.

Time takes its toll on every one and everything. People, things, styles, music, etc. But the one thing which time reflects most may just be exterior design.

Have you ever seen one of those posters that show every model of a particular vehicle ever made? If not, here’s one of the Ford Mustang. While not the most representative poster of all the models, it gives you a pretty darn good idea of how much the Mustang’s design has gone from boxy to curvy (as well as a creepy photo of Henry Ford too).

Looking back to the ’50s, you can see the textbook definition of sharp lines, hard creases, and boxy rear ends. Vox‘s sweet video below shows us how overall exterior design, of not only the Mustang but the majority of vehicles, was revolutionized at some point by gas prices, new thinking, and a handful of other factors involved in a dramatic change of approach.

Ford played a big role in changing the already-established school of thought. A designer from Europe by the name of Uwe Bahnsen was the first to push for a curvy design. And it happened in the 1982 Ford Sierra.

Ever since, the Mustang, along with other Ford vehicles, has flipped-flopped back and forth when it comes to design traits. But one thing is for sure, there will never be (at least we hope) another Mustang as boxy as the Fox body Mustang!

Check out the video and learn how things went from boxy to curvy, then let us know what you think.
