Allan Moffat poses with the '77 Special Edition Ford Mustang.

Custom Mustang GT will honor 40th anniversary of one-two victory led by Australian racing legend Allan Moffat.

Finding an appropriate way to pay tribute to the 40th year anniversary of a one-two finish in a race as iconic as Australia’s Bathurst 1000 requires a special touch. Then again, the performance team at Tickford have done a pretty good job of bringing the idea to life.

Australian Mustang Tuner Tickford Builds Moffatt Tribute Edition

Tickford, a sister company of Prodrive, has come up with a hot limited-edition Mustang in honor of the 1977 Bathurst 1000 where Australia’s Allan Moffat led Colin Bond to the Moffat Ford Dealer Team’s one-two run finish, as highlighted at SuperCars.com.

Never heard of Allan Moffat? Here are few quick bullet points on the former Canadian/Australian race car driver that speak to why he’s such an important part of the Ford family.

  • Four Wins in the Australian Touring Car Championship
  • Six Wins in the Sandown 500
  • Four wins in the Bathurst 500/1000
  • 1999 V8 Supercars Hall of Fame inductee

Moffatt, who began racing in his 20s, spent most of his time racing behind the wheel of Ford Falcons in Australia. But in the states, he drove Mustangs for Carroll Shelby, as detailed in a Hemmings.com report.

The ’77 Special is actually the second Bathurst throwback from the Melbourne-based business. The company also built a tribute to its two Supercars at Bathurst back in 2012.

No word yet on the spec details for the car dubbed the ’77 Special. But if the Mustang’s racing-heritage inspired look and Mr. Moffat’s official comments about the car are any indication of what to expect, it’ll make for a pretty cool collectible.

See what other Mustang owners are saying.

“The Tickford Bathurst ’77 Special” looks amazing, produces an unbelievable amount of power and the finish across all areas of the vehicle highlights why the return of Tickford is so important for the Australian automotive industry,” he said. “These guys know what they are doing and it shows in this special edition.”

As you might have expected, Tickford will build only 77 examples.
