Mustang Turbochargers Should Only Get Better

If you’ve ever wondered what continues to drive the appeal of turbocharged engines like the new EcoBoost Mustang, then this video should provide some clarity.
The 11-minute clip, posted by /DRIVE, isn’t really about Ford’s new four-banger. But it certainly helps to explain why so many people have been drawn to the engine, which has been a huge part of the success of the S550.
The video is hosted by Gale Banks of Banks Engineering, who shares a lot of interesting tidbits on the turbocharged engines in relationship to their naturally aspirated counterparts. He covers everything ranging from the basics on intercoolers to variable geometry turbos.
Banks also takes a look at what the future holds for turbocharging technologies, discussing
trends like electric turbochargers controlled by the ECU, and turbo compounding, which uses a smaller turbo to get the engine going and a larger turbo that takes over once it’s moving.
“There’s so much going on, there’s so much future right now,” says Banks. “Turbocharging is really coming into a world-wide stance.”
