2018 Cobra Jet

The 50th Anniversary Mustang Cobra Jet is capable of topping 150 mph.

Back in 1968, the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet took drag strips everywhere by storm and became an instant legend. Flash forward fifty years later, and the Mustang Cobra Jet is more triumphant than ever before.

Though it is for National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) drag racing only, the new Mustang will come in “Race Red” and “Oxford White,” and even comes with a commemorative 50th anniversary graphics package complete with anniversary badging.

Pushing the Cobra Jet to the Limit

Ford Performance wants this year’s Cobra Jet to leave FoMoCo enthusiasts in shock and awe. Not only is it capable of exceeding 150 mph, but it can also complete a quarter-mile in the mid eight-second range. Yes, you read that right.

Ford's New Cobra Jet is Fastest Ever

“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day Cobra Jet racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build the Cobra Jet brand based on its success at the track over five decades,” said Eric Cin, global director, Ford Performance Parts. “That, in turn, has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”

Limited Specs on a Limited Edition Mustang

Details on horsepower and torque are scant but as you can imagine, it’s a purpose-built dragster based on the 2018 Mustang platform. Also, since Ford is making only 68 non-VIN production units, you obviously won’t be able to (legally) drive these on the street—let alone obtain one.

The new Cobra Jet sports a supercharged 5.2-liter Coyote V8, proprietary four-link rear suspension, and a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle from Strange Engineering. And of course, a NHRA-certified roll cage, Racetech FIA seats, and a drag-ready coil-over suspension with custom Weld Racing wheels (emblazoned with 50th anniversary badging).

A Demon Hunter?

Remember when the Dodge Demon donned the stage and shattered so many records that the NHRA actually banned it? It has 840 horsepower with 100-octane fuel, and it ran the quarter-mile at shocking 9.6 seconds at barely 140 mph. To be fair, NHRA “technically” banned it from drag use because despite being blazingly quick on the track, it is equipped as a street car by default.

Judging by Ford’s quarter-mile claim, the Cobra Jet may very well tame the flames of the mighty Demon on the strip. Unlike the Demon, it most likely will not suffer the same ban as long as it has NHRA-approved equipment.

More details on the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet’s specs coming this summer.
