S650 Mustang

In preparation for the reveal of the all-new S650 Mustang, Ford has released a clip of the V8’s exhaust note.

The wait is almost over. We’re less than two weeks away from the reveal of the next-generation Ford Mustang, and now, the Blue Oval has released a teaser video featuring the sound of the new car’s V8. Spoiler alert: It sounds great. Now at this point, there are still a lot of questions about what’s in store for the latest version of Ford’s prized pony — but we still have more than enough info to get excited. So let’s do a brief recap.

First, as you can see from the image above, manual transmission fans are in luck. Because in an era when stick shifts are disappearing like free beer, it’s already been confirmed that the S650 Mustang — as it’s been code named — will have a proper third pedal. As someone who much prefers to row their own, that’s a great thing. That said, given how the Mustang has transformed from a straight-line machine into a proper sports car, it’ll be interesting to see if GT-spec cars get the option of a dual-clutch, as we saw with the 2021 Shelby GT500.

From the camouflaged test mules I’ve seen, it’s pretty clear the styling of the S650 Mustang in going to be of an evolutionary nature, which makes a lot of sense. Since this might very well be the last generation of internal combustion-powered Mustangs Dearborn builds, it would make sense not to rock the boat too much. Also, the lines of the current generation are far from broken — so it makes sense that Ford won’t spend too much time and treasure fixing them.

Personally, I’m curious about whether we’ll learn about the widely rumored hybrid Mustang, as that would open up new frontiers for iconic machine. More than likely, we’d see the electric bits be used to power the front wheels, and help shave time from the zero-to-60 sprint, along with making it grip better in the bends. And don’t forget — Drift Mode is a possibility too! Cross your fingers that we’ll get news about that when the S650 Mustang breaks cover in Detroit on September 14th!
