Prized Pony: GT350R Raced by Ken Miles is Most Valuable Mustang Ever
Movie magic likely helped push this famous Shelby racer to a record-setting auction price.
From the one-off “Old Crow” Mustang, to the Gone in 60 Seconds hero car, to the Roush Cobra SCCA Trans Am racer, there have been a lot of valuable Mustangs to cross the block over the past few years. But there can only be one most valuable Mustang, so after a record setting auction late last month, we have a new king.
And for what it’s worth? We think its amazing racing pedigree means this prize Pony more than deserves its place at the top of the list.
Previously, the record was held by example used in a movie about a certain San Francisco cop, which went for $3.4 million at the beginning of the year. That’s far from chump change, but bidding for the 1965 Ford Shelby GT350 Competition made famous by Ken Miles raced past that impressive figure, and ended at a whopping $3.84 million. Since the difference between the two is enough to pick up about seven examples of the latest Shelby GT350R, we’d call it clear victory.
This machine was dubbed the “Flying Mustang,” thanks to a famous picture of it with all four wheels off the ground during a Valentine’s Day race in 1965. With Miles at the wheel, the Mustang took the checkered flag that day, which was particularly impressive, given that it was the platform’s first appearance in a sanctioned race.
