Roush Mustang P-51A Built by a Hero

Roush Mustang P-51A

Rare and powerful, the Mustang P-51A was one veteran’s dream ride. When he finally got one, he made it even better.

Both the Ford Mustang and the P-51, the airplane that inspired it are undeniably American mechanical wonders. They are sleek and fast, and offer performance that matches their style.

But as good a plane as the P-51 was, the P-51A was even better. This was a purpose-built machine for the U.S. Army, one designed as a pure fighter. Packing a more powerful Allison engine and top speed of 390 miles per hour top speed, the Mustang P-51A proved a useful and incredibly capable aircraft.

So, it would only make sense that the muscle car named after this iconic plane might carry the same model name. And Roush Performance made that happen way back in 2008 when it introduced the Mustang P-51A to the world. Like its counterpart, the P-51A immediately became the company’s most powerful offering upon its arrival. Highly fortified internals, combined with a new Roush supercharger, increased the output of the stock 4.6-liter V8 all the way to 510 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque.

Only 310 P-51A airplanes were produced during its run, so it also makes sense that Roush would only build 151 examples of this special Mustang. So when one of our members, Sleeper_GT, pickup up #81, you can’t blame us for getting a little excited. The Afghanistan veteran had been trying to score one for quite a while, and he couldn’t wait to share it with us in this thread.

Despite its rarity, however, the OP couldn’t resist planning some mods for his new ride.

“Here are the parts I ordered that are waiting for me at the house:

VMP high flow elbow
VMP 67mm TB
Comp stage 2 blower cams
MGW flat stick shifter
GT500 strut mounts
BMR handling springs, panhard, panhard brace, LCA relocation brackets, and LCAs
Michelin Pilot super sport tires 275/30/18 and 295/30/18

Can’t wait to get home and turn some wrenches, get it tuned, and drive the crap out of it!”
