If you own a Fox Body Mustang, chances are your interior carpet is either beat to death or completely worn out. Either way, retaining the classic appeal of your pony car is going to require getting that inside stuff replaced.
Before the EcoBoost Mustang, before the new Ford GT with its turbocharged thump, there was the Ford Mustang SVO. And there is possibly no better example of such fine machinery than this one, which has to be the best-preserved one on the planet.
One of the last things I worked on before leaving Roush was a 5.8L Twin-Turbo 1988 Mustang. Ford’s then SVO (Special Vehicle Operations) group commissioned the car. They had learned about Chevrolet’s plans to introduce the Corvette ZR-1. Rumors put the price of the new Corvette variant at about $60,000. It was rumored to be one of the fastest production cars of its time. SVO wanted to sell this Mustang for $30,000, and have it fast enough to outrun the ‘Vette. This ZR-1 killer was also going to be the 25th Anniversary Special.
There’s no such thing as boring battles when it comes to street racing. Generally, those who tend to compete feel they’ve got enough goods under the hood to put on a show.
The latest race we’ve stumbled on is a showdown between a 900-horsepower turbo Fox-body Saleen Mustang and That Racing Channel’s own 850-horsepower 2JC Nissan 240SX.
Little is know about this nitrous-huffing small-block Ford (SBF) powered Fox-body other than it’s here to roll heads. Seriously, in a day and age of Coyote and even GM LS swaps it’s nice to see some good ol’ SBF power getting it done at the track.
