Eleanor Convertibles: We’re Starting to Like This Trend
Instead of thinking of it as a blasphemous remake, think of it as an awesome restomod that just so happens to use an Eleanor kit.
These Eleanor-inspired convertible Shelby GT500s have popped up recently and we honestly can’t say we’re upset. Sure they aren’t authentic and its somewhat sinful to disgrace the awesomeness that is the Eleanor. Deep down, you know they’re all fake anyway—apart from a small number So why not think outside the box? Or in this case, outside the coupe.
To back up the film Gone in 60 Seconds looks, a 331 stroker with more 400 horsepower is under the hood. Nitrous is hidden away in the trunk as well, for an extra bit of push. But more so than an Eleanor clone, this convertible is a genuine frame-off restoration as well, giving you essentially a new car.
Comfort features like air conditioning, an upgraded sound system, power steering and power disc brakes are in this rotisserie-restored car. Upgrades from the original car include coilover front suspension, Tremec 5 speed transmission, a 9 inch posi-traction differential, and those awesome side-exhausts. Inside, things are Shelby intensive. Shelby and GT500 badging can be found throught the interior, with Shelby gauges and glove box, GT500 seats, and GT500 center console.
Perhaps we can start to think of cars like this in a different way. Instead of thinking of it as a blasphemous re-make of an Eleanor Mustang, think of it as an awesome resto-mod that just so happened to have an Eleanor kit on it. That softens the blow for us, and actually makes a great deal of sense. Instead of being another grey on grey striped Mustang, imagination can be used and your vintage GT500 can be tailor-made to what you want.
After all, with a car like this, you’ll get all of the fun of the real thing (and maybe more, with all that open air) for a fraction of the cost.
