Default Durability of Vinyl Stripes

Just wondering if anyone out there who has put vinyl stripes on their Stangs has experienced any noticeable fading / peeling / cracking of their stripes. If so, how long have they been on? Do you live in a harsh weather climate? Who makes them?

I'm asking because I'm contemplating whether or not I should go with the vinyls or paint-ons. I'm leaning towards vinyls because it's cheaper, but you do get what you pay for.

Thanks

I think your best bet would be to have them painted on. Mine came with stripes on the side and after a year, they are still holding up very well. I do keep Aerospace 303 Protectant on them. However, I have a 2001Conversion Van that has Silver MetallicVinyl stripes that are beginning to fade and crack. Seems like the metallic colors don't hold up as well.
Now I have read where some guys had vinyl stripes put on then had a body shop go over them with clear coat. That will help make them last a little longer but not as long as having them painted on.

Just was wondering...

What is the price range (difference) of vinyl and paint?

Thanks for the info 07 Stang.

tmsmith, I'm going to estimate here as far as the prices are concerned, based on the experience I've had with body shop visits (unfortunately).

A good set of 3M vinyl tape would run you about $150 (at least according to BSM's web site) and if you had the skill and patience it takes to install them, installation is obviously free but will cost you a few hours of your time. A body shop will probably charge you between $100-$200 for labor, depending on where you go.

Also depending on where you go is the price of painting. I'm ballparking (and this could be totally off) that a good body shop would charge you around $800-$1000 for painted stripes. Factors that contribute to this also are the width of the stripes, if the go the length of the car (bumper to bumper), and the color and whether or not it's metallic.

Ah the price we pay for beauty

I have 10" vinyl and pins for over a year. I garage keep and figure about 5 or 6 years is good. I'd say go big or go home. Paint them a while you are at it do something different with them that vinyls can't.

Good suggestion, here's something that vinyls can't do...well I guess paint can't do it either, but it's still different!

I have vinyl on my Stang and I had them some of them redone after getting from the used card lot because they were not installed correctly and the very ends were srinking back about 1/2 inch I can only assume the guy that put them on pulled them to tight and in the harsh Ohio weather they srank back about 1/16 on the sides and 1/2 on the ends but after restriping by a por shop I have had no problem with them. Paint them if you have the money and want a better look you will be much happier with them because vinyl will not shine as well as paint. Vinyl can be removed with some time and a clean up but paint is permanent. Good Luck
