NYS Legality on Smoked headlight/tail light covers
Hey guys,
So I've been diagnosed with the modification bug, As of last week my car was totally stock other then my head unit and a steeda oil cap, But now I've ordered my SLP Loudmouths, and I'm about to pull the trigger on blacking my baby's lights out. My question is, To anybody with their lights blacked out, Ever get any hassles with the 5-0? (Not the good 5.0) Or should I be fine? I live in Syracuse, NY.
Thanks a bunch in advance.

i have not gotten hassled by the 5-0, the po-po's, the blue and white, or any of those nasty buzz-killers.....yet. you should check w/ the local laws, but where i'm at its ok during the day, at night i take off the headlight covers, the rest i leave on bc doesnt look that dark, only the headlights get dim.

Same thing here. If you take off the blackouts when it gets dark you are fine. If you leave them in it could and should cost you a ticket. Are you planning on going with the Black Stripe? Otherwise, it looks great the way you have it imso. I have never been one to like the blackout look tho. Good luck with it and post pics when done.

I have vinyl overlays on the rear and the side markers, clear lens/black housing turns, and left the front 4 lights alone.
The vinyl on the back isn't very dark, and you can still see my brake lights just fine during the day. Here's a turn signal for ya.

First let me say I am not a lawyer but I have been pulled over for this so I did some research. Normaly any state will say the lights have to be visable for a certain distance and no one is going to actualy measure. The law in most any state will say must meet SAE (standards of automotive engineers) specs and can not be covered or obscured. It is really going to come down to the cop that pulls you over. Not all police officersknow every traffic code and some will write specific things and others hunt for everything. Small things like tinted headlight covers even if illegal might be left alone if you are not driving like an idiot. But good luck and hope you are legal or can afford a ticket in your state.

I lived in Syracuse for a little while I hate the laws up there... I lived on the east side out in the boonies for the senior year in Kirkville...lol... that was a big change for someone coming from Miami, FL....
