Here in Missouri the law permits 35% on front side windows. The law enforcement officers have a "gauge" that they hold up inside your window that shows them what the percentage is.
The s#!ts of it is that the factory tint is dark enough that when 35% is added to it, it is overall a little darker than 35% and certain officers here will ticket you for that.

I did 50% on the side glass and 20% on rear quarter and window. The guy who did mine said that 20% is what you see on SVs.

50% is like a light pair of sunglasses. 35% is about perfect for tints since it shades the light coming in but still allows a view inside the car when viewed straight on. You do however have to watch out for the factory tint, ever so slight though it is. It will change the overall percentage enough to push you over the line.
From a cop stand point. Most of us do have tint meters in our squads and they are pretty accurate usually. More often than not we will drive past you without a second glance unless your car appears to be significantly past the limit or we are stopping you for another reason and notice the tints.
