Default repainting faux gas cap

so after 2 years the black spray paint is finally chipping on my faux gas cap, so its time to repaint it. i cant remember what grit sandpaper i used last time, so i wanted some suggestions on which grit to use, or does it really even matter? thanks!

It doesn't really matter. It's common sense really...don't go so coarse that it leaves deep striations that are hard to sand out, and before you prime finish with very fine paper. Plan on using 3 or more different grits.

Did you use adhesion promoter the first time? I'd sand it really well, spray a coat or two of adhesion promoter, then a couple light coats of any primer, let it COMPLETELY dry (Maybe a full day), give it a very light wet sand, then paint with several very light coats.

If you gloss it, put a couple coats of clear on it also. I'm not too sure about clear if you are painting it flat black, I'd guess there is a flat clear coat, but I'll let someone else chime in on that.

i believe last time i used an adhesion promoter, but it was 2 years ago and i was going by a friends guidance lol. i def put some clear on i think tho because it was def shiny, but still looked like it had some texture like matte does, so i guess its kind of like a semi gloss look

Plastidip it! Down the road you won't have to worry about chips!

I would never recommend plasti-dip, except for this. They're right...it would be much easier, and apparently if you screw up that crap just peels right off. If in a year or two, or a few months it starts peeling, it's a super easy fix. I've never used the stuff so I didn't even consider it for this.
