Default Need radar detector help

I have been thinking about getting a radar detector, but know nothing about them. Wondering which one is good, and most importantly do they actually work? Not looking to spend a crazy amount unless it LEGIT works. Anyone have one they recommend?

I'm not even sure that they are legal in all states. Might want to look into that one first.

They arent legal in all states, but there are some that work well. I haven't looked into them for a little bit but I know they have been adding GPS and stuff on there for speed cams. I think there are a few new frequencies they have to watch for and ways they use the frequencies. Also the small systems that just plug into the cigarette lighter and you put in your window won't do anything for lasers really. They might be able to detect them if it bounces off something and hits it, but unless you have something to reflect it or absorb it, they got you.

This seems to be a decent website to get info

There is no substitute for vigilance, but electronic counter measures are available and will tip the balance of power in your favor. If you want "complete" protection, a good radar/laser detector in combination with a laser jammer and the use of VEIL to cover your headlights and license plates will help. Keep in mind, however, there is no 100% effective solution.
There is a lot of information available on the web. Just Google it and you'll have plenty to read.
I would recommend either a Valentine-1 or the latest Escort detector (9500i, I think it is), coupled with a Blinder Extreme-47, and VEIL.
Good luck and be careful.

Yes, detectors do work. They aren't perfect, and will not always save you (instant on and Laser are lethal) but a good detector will greatly increase your odds.

Want the very best? Passport 9500ix. $500, and as good as it gets.

Very good? Passport 8500x50. $300+ Great unit. A super performer. Comes with either a red or blue display.

Both units are radar and laser detectors. the 9500ix is GPS powered and will "self learn" where false signals are.

I have a used 8500x50. PM me.

I think detectors are legal in all states except Virginia and DC.

That is a great website for radar detector info. Another great one is www.guysoflidar.com. Yet another is http://veilguy.blogspot.com .

I love my GPS equipped Escort Passport 9500IX. It has been a very valuable piece of equipment.

As far as what states they're legal in, unless you're in VA, Washington DC, or on a military base, they're completely legal.

IMHO the new Beltronics (same company as Escort) STI-r Plus is the best out there in stealth protection. Even better, it can be purchased with or without the Escort ZR-4 laser shifters (not the greatest in laser protection). For Lidar, I would highly recommend looking into the Laser Interceptor over at http://www.radarbusters.com . They have been consistently reviewed as the best performing laser jammers out there. Keep in mind a growing number of states have outlawed laser jammers (Texas the newest one on that bandwagon).

The biggest thing to take away from anything I'm saying here is you get what you pay for. Don't even bother buying a sub-$100 detector. The false sense of security it gives you will end up biting you in the rear in the long run. Do yourself a favor and save up for a much better, more sensitive one.

I also use a Valentine 1 and give it a double thumbs up. Another member mentioned a Beltronics GX65. I looked at it and it seems to get very good reviews. Unless I personally try one, I couldn't say if it's really better or not. I can tell you the Valentine has been bulletproof for me, and a great investment.
