Default RE: OEM look touchscreen, nav, mp3, carPC install

One last thing for now. The particular computer I have (Ampie) and most others have additional ports inside the computer on the motherboards. On my computer I opened the computer case and added an extension for 2 usb and 2 firewire ports, there are also extra ports for additional hardrives and fans, etc. When I recieved my computer I only had 2 usb ports, which wasnt enough. Computers can be modified many times over. In this picture you can see in the left corner three white usb cables coming out of the computer case and going under the carpet. To do this I opened the computer case, cut a hole in the face plate on the computer case to feed the wires through, and then attached the extension to the open ports. The face plate is easy to cut and modifications are just as easy. Just be carefull when opening these computer cases, the wires are very close together and can be torn out if you try to open the case to hard or fast.

All I can say is...wow...thanks for taking the time to go into such detail. VERY informative for a someone like myself.

Thanks for the pics and info...I'll be reading this several times and posting when I have actually made the purchase/install.

Hey, your install looks great! I am sorta a electronics noob, so please bear with me. My car is a 2006 mustang with shaker 500. I have a toshiba satellite laptop with VGA output. It also has GPS software on it with a usb plug/gps chip and it also plays DVDs. I want a carputer that will do navigation, play DVDs, and MP3s. I also want a system that will use the stock speakers, including the sublike speakers in the doors. Is this a good monitor to use for what I want?

If you have time, I would like to know the best way to hook this up. Here is what I am considering...
If I buy this kit, What dash kit adapters will I have to use? Is any modification neccesary?
If I mount my laptop in the trunk, should I connect it to the monitor using VGA cables? What type of amp do I need (4 channel?)? I have seen your wiring schematic, but I am still confused. The monitor listed above states that it has audio output through the monitors speaker. So how do I connect my car's speakers to the system? What cable to I use? Is their a specific wiring harness, if so where can I get it?

My install is completly In-Dash, the whole computer is the same size as the OEM radio, this eliminated the need for any extension cables for VGA. I was originally going to mount the PC under the seat in a custom .063" aluminum box (for sale now) but ended up going for the complete indash when I took apart the stang and realized how much room is in there. Its nice also if i need to do big maintainence I can pull the whole unit assembled and bring it inside and boot it on a testbench. Not possible if you have componets scattered about your car. I of my amps is under the drivers seat and the other one is in the trunk. I can say that im loving my PC so far and Ive had no problems at all with it yet, (in use for 6 months) Also 1 reason i went with a 3.5" harddrive is the fact that 2.5" drives use fluid bearings which tend to get thick during the cold winter months and won't boot untill the car warms. So far no trouble booting my system even on a few 0 degree days here in Mi. Here are some more pics of the back and when I was bench testing it.

Awsome job blk06V6. You should whip a few of those up and sell them on Ebay. If I had the fundage for a new stereo I'd deffinitely try to get you to make one for me. Excelent work and from the pics it looks very high quality.[sm=hail.gif]

I like all pros of it, but are there any cons that you've found while using it?

I am planning on buying a 7 inch in dash monitor, and replacing the shaker 500 head unit with it. Then I plan on connecting the monitor to a laptop mounted under the seat with a VGA cable. Is there any way to connect my laptop to the stock shaker 500 amps, or do I have to buy a new 4 channel amp? If there is a way, what cables and connections will be neccesary.
