I'm for either painting the stock mirrors, or finding a more "retro" looking cover.

I honestly would never replace my stock mirrors for something else including the covers. I feel the stock mirrors are great and can be painted if desired. That will at least keep the original look of your car and not add a bad flow throughout the side of the car.
