A K&N filter will help, and I don't think your parents would mind. Now for the more important part of my reply. Why are you sneaking around behind your parents back? They let you get a Mustang GT, yes I said LET YOU because you obviously are living at home. You are living under their roof, eating their food, using their utilities. You may have bought the car, paid the insurance and be paying for gas and maintenance it makes no difference. Unless you live in Spoiledbratville, not many kids have a car half as nice as the car you are driving right now. Give your parents the benefit of the doubt and the respect they deserve. When you become an adult, move out on your own and provide for yourself then you can mod the crap out of your Stang. For now forget about the Bragging Rights you are after and be gratefull for what you have.[sm=forgetit.gif]

First, I'd like to say nice car. Consider yourself lucky. Here's a thought, just wait until a) your not living under your parent's roof b) you own the car outright or c) the warranty has expired. At that point, it don't matter!

btw, your parents would never notice if you dropped in a k & n air filter. It may be a less than ideal first mod for you but it's a start and I wouldn't think that it's something they would ever notice. If necessary, wait until your next oil change...you needed a good filter and you'll never need to replace the one you bought. Play the financial responsibitly card :-) Of course, I don't know your parents and honesty is the best policy.

Congrats on your find of a GT at that price. Don't worry about the filter, to get the biggest increase in power that is not given away to casual inspection, get a predator or SCT tuner. You'll get an extra 15 to 20 hp and only YOU will know what's going on. Only problem is they cost 350-400$.

Don't you know that modifying your stang is addictive. Once you start you will never be satisfied. Just be happy and grateful you have it because there are people who live a life time and never be able to obtain it.
ORIGINAL: AmericanMuscle4.6GT

parents won't let me mod the stang. wanna do whatever i can to make a little diff in hp and MPG. will a drop in filter help at all? which is the best brand? how much will it cost? can i do it without my parents knowing?

I wouldn't think someone that gives advice like this in another post would need help picking out an air filter:

this is one of your replies on another post, advice or parrot.

FULL BOLT ONS, all the best brands, ported heads, and a little bigger cam.
JLT CAI
BBK throttle body
Hooker long tubes, o/r h, axleback of your choice
bigger injectors, better fuel rails
UDP's
Charge motion plates
custom dyno tune, 93 octane.

5.0 mustang mag did longtubes, CAI, and ported heads, and found 350 RWHP. so this leads me to believe theres more to it, maybe even w/o cams. the base numbers for just ported heads were 312 to the rear wheels, no other mods whatsoever. thats a 42 hp gain to the wheels.

i think this would make a pretty streetable car, especially if u decided to leave out the cam, u could probably get 370-380 or so to the ground.

i really don't like the idea of FI, especially turbo. its cheating, plus turbos are just good for numbers and not much else. SPOOLING TIME SUCKS THE BIG ONE!
