If you chirp or spin at all, you are pretty much screwed. If you don't do that, I am pretty sure that can't do anything to you unless you go over the speed limit, because technically you are still in 100% complete control of the car and can stop just as quickly at that speed as if you were accelerating very slowly. Remember physics, a body in motion wants to stay in motion, not a body in acceleration wants to stay in acceleration!

GT06GT, do yourself a favor and get a lawyer. Your chances improve GREATLY with a decent lawyer. At best, they can get the charges dropped totally, and at worst they can get your sentence reduced. Often they can get you a reduced fine along with "Court Supervision" which basically means that if you play nice and don't get a ticket during your supervision period, your ticket disappears. Most lawyers will be flexible with payment plans, as long as you retain them (give some $ before the court date) and are reliable. Also, they can get you extensions on your fine so you don't have to pay it right away.

And if you think your ticket is BS, I work in a law office (in case you can't tell) and I see worse than that every day. The cop who pulled you over could have done worse to you if he had wanted, as others have said, but far be it from me to lecture you about anything. Just realize that if a cop really wants to be an *******, he can do all kinds of things to basically ruin your night.

Anyways, I hope my post helped you. Either way, good luck.

Sometimes cops do make mistakes, or think they see something that isn't so.
Cops make mistakes all the time, but they certainly don't admit them all the time. Cops are often influenced by the events of the day, and if some cop just tried to chase down a speeder and didn't catch him, he will be hot. And that hotness can be taken out on you. The bottom line here is that you broke tread, instantly putting you in the 'exehbition of speed' category. It was your fault, and you know it. I'm not saying you shouldn't have done it, but you shouldn't be mad at the cop for it. tell em in court that you didn't realize you broke tread. Tell em you accelerated hard, but that's it. You might get a break.
I will make one final point here. Most of the cops tickets written are done so solely for revenue enhancment. Period. Safety is a secondary concern, aside from the 'revenue ehancment' in today's world. Speeding is a perfect example. If cops practiced what they preach, i might be inclined to buy into the 'saftey' reasoning behind it. But off duty cops are as big a speeding culprits as i have ever seen. The fact is that if people didn't speed, the country would go bankrupt. And cops know this. Hence, the word 'quota' comes to mind.

It wasn't about them giving him the drunk test. They were messing with his wife. What other part of the story do you need?
Messing with his wife?!!? That's like saying you could have killed your buddy when you played lightsabers last night with flashlights. Since when is shining a flashlight messing with someone? How do I know what miss innocent is hiding wherever? You know how many guns a female can actually hide under a cocktail dress? There are always two sides to a story. Ummm, how about the other side?

It's not only lack of experience, overconfidence is also a problem with some drivers. The traits that make younger people perfect for the military such as reaction time an invincibility can be a negative factor on the road. The more experienced drivers on this forum aren't claiming superiority. None of the posts said "you can't drive like an *** until you've had your license for 10 years. Read and comprehend they are telling you not to drive like an *** on public roads. I'm not worried about you, it's the other reasonable dirvers I care about. Usually when I see someone driving like an idiot (young and old), I think to myself " I hope he wraps it around a tree instead of another driver". Ever notice how many experienced race car drivers are killed driving cars built for racing on tracks built for safety?

Nuff said.
Well Said!

Very extensively, actually. Two books I highly recommend reading. "A speeder's guide to beating tickets" and "What cops don't want you to know" --Both written by retired cops. (They are on loan to a friend, don't have the author's handy) Both can be found at Barnes & Noble. Also, this months Car & Driver has an excellent article about this concept as well.

I can only assume Scooter is a cop. And by his very aggressive nature on this post probably one of the ones that most of us would hate to have a run in with. I suppose saying "cops suck" was not the best language to use and I appologize to anyone it offended. I do have a number of good friends who are police or retired police. That being said, most of them are bullies and are over the top type A personalities. I have listened to (and enjoyed) their stories of screwing with people. My issue was singular, not something that happens repeatedly in my life. But was, IMO, handled very unproffesionally and without warrant in the first place. And how do you substantiate saying "you never know what a woman can hide in a cocktail dress" WHAT IN THIS SITUATION WOULD PROVOKE YOU TO BELIEVE THAT MY WIFE HAD INTENTION OF HARMING AN OFFICER!! Scooter,You sir, are an idiot! And if you are a police officer you should consider a career change as it is apparent that "Public Safety" is NOT what's on your mind. I will not waste my time replying to a rebuttal.

You got railroaded. I'd say you have a very good chance in court, what evidence is the cop going to offer? You spun your wheels briefly while accelerating to the speed limit? Good grief! I'd be surprised if the cop even shows up for that court appointment.
+1

depending on the state, there is a difference between careless an reckless driving... you got the lesser of the two, but when your tires turn over an you catch second gear I dont believe youre gonna win this one... tires dont turn over in normal driving...
on occasion they do, my grandmother (with 50 some+ years of driving experience) spun wheels driving in front of me turning out of a parking lot. I would assume she has fully developed her "resoning ability" and is plenty experienced of a driver by now. **** happens

The only evidence the officer needs is his WORD. The judge will believe what ever the officer tells him, he does not need video evidence, physical evidence, absolutely no evidence whatsoever…
Thats also true....

2 words...excessive acceleration.
yep, my mom got that before

Doesn't matter what anyone here really thinks. Than said here's my $.02. You're under 20, driving a Mustang GT, spinning tires (showing off)........[sm=bustedsign.gif]
why does everyone assume that when your under 20 and you spin wheels or do anything your just showing off? What if its an accident? What if you just felt like going fast. Nobody's dead from his little incident is there?

LOL you don't know that. At 15 years old with my permit i was a better driver than 99% of the people on the roads. Before i got my license i had an easy 20k miles under my belt. Don't go off on something you don't know anything about.
Narcisitic, hmm?
lol my thoughts exactly

Cops suck, I do not believe that many are in the publics favor. And I do not believe that there are many judges willing to listen to "Joe Public" when 70% of the towns income comes frome traffic tickets
70%?!?! WTF? I am sure you did your research before posting this though, and aren't just posting random numbers to bolster your unsubstantiated accusations. I am sure that sales, property, utility, park, and income taxes have no place in a town's coffers, right? And what the hell does a judge care about getting income for the towns?!
I am sure you didn't smell of alcohol at all after your Christmas party and that bastard cop was just inconveniencing you, right? And I bet you were a perfect gentleman and didn't provoke him in the least, right? Lets tell the whole story Ghost, so that we get a full report of the situation. It's half-assed stories like yours that get people like you to believe what the media portrays as abusive police encounters.

I don't drink. there are a number of towns (mine included) that show on their public record that over 50% of there town income comes from traffic tickets. We had one town in particular that had to fire all the public safety people due to a bypass was built and they could no longer afford to pay for police or fire protection (Andrews S.C.). Had to rely on state police and the next towns fire and EMS. Allow me to welcome you to Southern politics. A lot of our areas are sparsely populated or held by large landowners (with the exception of the larger towns and counties). And judges are hired, why would you assume they are not intrested in preserving thier income.
thats a valid statistic, FYI

ok now this post is going way off topic... I dont deny that i probably broke a law with the excessive speed. But what i was asking is if I go in do you think i can get them to drop the points off the ticket, i dont mind paying the ticket since i know they just want my money. Being 19, having 3 points on a new mustang will skyrocket my insurance, and just fyi im probably getting around 20mpg cause im driving with such low rpms.
And also, for the people giving me advice on trying to justify my actions, I cant justify what i did, i just wanna go in there and give em a I learned my lesson so please drop the points so AAA doesnt rape me over the next 3 years kinda speech. Then i expect the judge to tell me im an idiot and i dont know what im doing and i could have killed someone if a squirrle crossed the road and then an ox came from the other side and what not.
do that in court!!! accept the blame, you have a good chance

Ghost,
The next time you need the Police, just remember "Cops suck".
Not all cops are bad guys. I live in the Piedmont of NC and
the Police do a fine job. They're not all out there to make
the city they patrol money from tickets.

I should know; I've been a cop for 13 years.
i know quite a few really nice guys and very good cops. But some are just dicks >_<

OK, you've accepted teh verbal bashing you deserved. I admire your ability to accept fault for your actions. Go in with a very humble attitude and try to get the charges reduced. Maybe an offer to traffic school might help. Best to consult legal advice from a lawyer (that's why they go to school and get paid so much/hr). As stated before. Good luck and maintain a positive attitude.
+1 on the Defensive Driving class and offer to do a little community service in lieu of the 3 points. All they can say is no.

I think if you go in there with your hat in your hand and tell the judge you've learned your lesson, say you're sorry and all, they might cut you a little slack.

Mike
yeah community service sucks, but the defensive driving courses can actually be fun depending on where you go... some show you how to manuver through a skid and power slide and stuff like that lol. One of my cop friends said just dont get too cocky after you take it.<< Good tip

+1 Anytime someone gets a ticket for speeding or similar traffic offenses, everyone jumps on their high horse to berate you about your lack of experience and how speeding endangers

Thanks Ghost, I'm a cop.
ORIGINAL: The Ghost

I got the same exact treatment coming home from the company Chistmas party. Had a red light, left on green , but never spun or chirped. Got pulled a block later with the oficer saying I left with "excesive haste" had me out of the car (in a tux) doing drunk test while his partner went and shined his flashlight in my wifes lap (whom was dressed in a high slit cocktail dress). I confronted his partner about his behavior and ended up with a cop screaming in my face about my unwillingness to cooperate. I told both that I felt threatened and was locking myself in my car while I called highway patrol to moderate. They cops that pulled me left immediatley, I took the car # and the tag and gave it to HP. Never heard a word. Cops suck, I do not believe that many are in the publics favor. And I do not believe that there are many judges willing to listen to "Joe Public" when 70% of the towns income comes frome traffic tickets

Being that you are not going to waste your time replying to a rebuttal, I will reply to yours with that knowledge. Yeah, I'm a cop. Your skills were at work there! I am glad you did your research. (It's in my profile.)
Your first post said 70% of a town's income comes from tickets, but your reply to mine backed down to 50%. Why the change of heart?
You say your issue is singular, yet you bag all cops, and yet I am the idiot.
I never said anything in your "situation" made me believe your wife had any intention of harming an officer. Hundreds of slain officers came up on situations which they thought no one had the intention of hurting them. I was simply pointing out good officers take into account everything that is going on. You decided to look at it as raping your wife, when in actuality it was shining a light on her lap. I shine my light in everyone's lap. Its usually where there hands are too, ya perv. I am sorry, but if that freaks you out, what was your wife doing wearing anything but jeans? Give me a break, sounds like from your story, you were being the aggressive one, confronting officers about their behavior. Or maybe you just recently watched "Crash" and decided to make your own version.
But, Ghost I am glad you can listen to and enjoy your "good friends'" stories of screwing with other people but have a problem with it happening to you. Hey, maybe it did happen the way you said and those were bad cops, but not all are bad. And being a good one, yes DID take offense to your comments. Any good cop would.
I am not sure where you got that I have an "aggressive nature", that is anything but the case and is reflected in the work I do and in the way I deal with the public that does not act like you. I asked for you to look at the other side of the story, but you can't seem to do that because your type-A personilty makes you know you are right and everyone else is wrong. I just hope that that "southern justice" is there when a cocktail dress wearing fool holds your cop-hating butt up!
Its so easy for you to bag on cops. Hell, it's easy for everyone to do it. I just asked you to look at it from their side of the story too. And now I get jumped on and told I have PMS for pointing out a flaw in Ghost's post. Well, which is the "Valid statistic"? 50% or 70%? And what city, county, state are your statistics for? Oh, and FYI Birdieman, the country IS bankrupt. I find it hard to believe that any educated person thinks that traffic fines are going to make a dent in an eight trillion dollar defecit any time soon. Thats with a "t". And I laugh that you think they play that big a part in local government, let alone the national government. Please, stick your heads back in their holes in the ground and save your one-sided "facts" for the "Enquirer". Maybe those "facts" stick in po-dunk one-officerville, but they're not going to in any decent-sized town, and especially a big city. Parking tickets? Well, now you are getting somewhere.
